Atlanta Layover Guide: How Long You Need for Downtown, the Delta Flight Museum and College Park

Atlanta is one of the few hub airports where a long layover has an obvious use: the city centre is 16 minutes away on a train that leaves from inside the terminal, and an aviation museum with a walk-through 747 is five minutes from the kerb. The limiting factor is not distance but security, because ATL’s checkpoints can take an hour on a summer afternoon. This guide works out the arithmetic for each option and describes what to do with a shorter gap without leaving the airport, as of September 2026.

The arithmetic

Leaving the airport means re-clearing security, and at ATL that is the variable. The airport publishes live wait times, and on a weekday morning the Main checkpoint can be ten minutes; on a Sunday afternoon or a storm evening it can be an hour. Working back from the gate: allow 20 minutes from a mid-concourse gate to the MARTA station or the taxi aisle (Plane Train, escalators, walk through baggage claim), 16 to 20 minutes to downtown each way, and 60 to 90 minutes for security plus the walk back to the gate. That leaves about two hours in the city from a five-hour layover and three from a six-hour one. The Delta Flight Museum is closer: ten minutes each way by taxi and the same security margin, so a four-hour layover gives an hour and a half in the hangars. TSA PreCheck or CLEAR cut the return by half an hour and change the sums.

Downtown by MARTA

Follow the MARTA signs to the west end of the Domestic Terminal (from the International Terminal, take the free shuttle across first), tap a contactless card at the gate ($2.50) and board any northbound train. Get off at Peachtree Center (17 minutes) and walk west along Andrew Young International Boulevard for ten minutes to Centennial Olympic Park, the 1996 Olympic site, which has the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, the College Football Hall of Fame and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights around its edges. With two hours, choose one: the Aquarium needs 90 minutes and a timed ticket bought in advance, World of Coca-Cola about an hour, the Civil and Human Rights Center an hour. With three hours you can add lunch on Peachtree Street or a ride on the Atlanta Streetcar ($1) round the downtown loop past the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park in Sweet Auburn. Our MARTA guide has fares, hours and the other stations.

The Delta Flight Museum

Delta’s museum is in two 1940s hangars next to the airline’s headquarters at 1060 Delta Boulevard, Hapeville, a mile north-east of the Domestic Terminal; the entrance for rideshare and taxis is 747 Woolman Place. It opens 9 am to 3 pm with last entry 15 minutes before closing; the hangars, the 747 and the store are closed on Wednesdays and the whole museum closes for private events on other days, so check the calendar on deltamuseum.org and buy tickets in advance. Admission is about $12.50, everyone over 18 needs photo ID at the security gate, and parking is free. Inside are aircraft from Delta’s 1920s crop-dusting origins, the Boeing 767 Spirit of Delta bought by employees in 1982, the first Boeing 747-400 delivered to Northwest, which you can walk through and out onto the wing, a Boeing 737 flight simulator (extra fee, four sessions a day, book ahead) and an Airbus VR experience. A taxi from Aisle A of the Ground Transportation Center takes about ten minutes; the Hilton Atlanta Airport and the Holiday Inn & Suites Atlanta Airport North on Virginia Avenue are a mile away, which makes the museum an easy morning before a check-out and an afternoon flight.

College Park and the Gateway Center

Historic College Park, one MARTA stop south of the airport, has a restored Main Street with cafés and restaurants (The Real Milk & Honey is the local brunch name) and is the setting for the Hotel Indigo Atlanta Airport College Park, one block from the station; it fills two hours pleasantly and needs no taxi. The Gateway Center, one stop on the SkyTrain, is the Georgia International Convention Center and the Gateway Center Arena, home of the College Park Skyhawks, with the Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway and the Renaissance Atlanta Airport Gateway for lunch at Champions Beer Garden or Hickory & Hazel; on an event day it is worth the two-minute ride. The Porsche Experience Center, with its test track, is on the airport’s east side by the International Terminal, a taxi ride away and best booked in advance.

Under four hours: stay airside

With less than four hours the airport itself is the layover, and ATL is better equipped for it than most. The Plane Train and the pedestrian tunnel between the Domestic Terminal and Concourse E, lined with the Zimbabwean stone sculptures and the Flight Paths light installation, are a walk in themselves. The concourses have local restaurants (Chicken + Beer on D and One Flew South on E among them) and the lounges described in our lounges guide, and Minute Suites on B, E and F rent a private room by the hour (see the day rooms guide). The interfaith chapel on the Concourse F mezzanine and the art gallery in the Domestic Terminal atrium are quiet at any hour.

Overnight layovers

If the gap runs overnight, the sleeping in the airport guide covers the terminal and Minute Suites, and the SkyTrain and hotel shuttles guide the hotels that get you back for a 6 am flight: the four Gateway Center hotels on the 24-hour SkyTrain, and the Atlanta Airport Marriott, The Westin Atlanta Airport, the Holiday Inn North and the Hotel Indigo with all-night shuttles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long a layover do I need to leave Atlanta airport?

Five hours for downtown: 20 minutes from the gate to the MARTA station, 16 minutes on the train, the same back, and 60 to 90 minutes to re-clear security, which leaves about two hours in the city. Four hours is enough for the Delta Flight Museum, which is a ten-minute taxi ride from the terminal. Under four hours, stay airside; the Plane Train, the lounges and Minute Suites are the layover.

What can I see downtown in two hours?

From Peachtree Center station (17 minutes from the airport) it is a ten-minute walk west to Centennial Olympic Park, with the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, the College Football Hall of Fame and the Center for Civil and Human Rights around it. Pick one paid attraction (the Aquarium needs 90 minutes) or walk the park and Peachtree Street and eat before heading back.

Is the Delta Flight Museum worth a layover?

For anyone who likes aircraft, yes: it is next to Delta's headquarters at 1060 Delta Boulevard in Hapeville, five minutes by taxi from the Domestic Terminal, with historic aircraft from the 1920s on, the 767 Spirit of Delta, a Boeing 747-400 you can walk through and onto the wing, a 737 flight simulator and an Airbus VR experience. It opens 9 am to 3 pm, the hangars and 747 are closed on Wednesdays and on private-event days, so check the calendar and buy tickets in advance; admission is about $12.50 and photo ID is required for adults.

Can I store luggage at Atlanta airport?

There are no public left-luggage lockers at ATL. If you are on a single ticket your checked bags go through to the destination, and hand luggage travels with you on MARTA without trouble. Some off-airport luggage services deliver to the terminal for a fee; a hotel day room at the Gateway Center is another way to leave bags for a few hours.
