Connecting at Atlanta Airport: Minimum Times, the Plane Train, Customs and Overnight Connections

Around two-thirds of the passengers at Atlanta are connecting rather than starting or ending a journey there, which is why the airport is designed as one long line of concourses on a single train. The connection itself is fast; what goes wrong is usually the inbound flight, and in summer that means thunderstorms. This guide covers the minimum times, the routine for domestic and international transfers, what to do when a connection breaks, and where to sleep when it breaks late, as of September 2026.

Minimum connection times

Delta, which operates about three-quarters of ATL’s flights, publishes minimum connection times of roughly 40 minutes for domestic-to-domestic and domestic-to-international, and 90 minutes for international-to-domestic, and its booking system will not sell a connection shorter than that on one ticket. Other airlines’ minimums are similar. On a single ticket, the airline is responsible for rebooking you if the inbound flight is late, so the minimum is safe in the sense that you will not be stranded; it is not safe in the sense that you will make the flight. Practical advice from people who connect here often: 60 to 90 minutes for a domestic connection, two hours if you are on separate tickets or checking bags between different airlines, and two to two and a half hours arriving from abroad. In June, July and August, add half an hour to each figure for afternoon and evening connections (see our thunderstorm delays guide).

The Plane Train and the walk

Every concourse is inside the same security perimeter, so a connection never involves leaving the secure area unless you are arriving from abroad with bags. The Plane Train runs every two minutes beneath the concourses, stopping at the Domestic Terminal, T, A, B, C, D, E, F and the International Terminal; adjacent concourses are two minutes apart and the full run from the Domestic Terminal to F takes about eight minutes. Walking is an alternative for one or two concourses: the pedestrian tunnel with moving walkways runs from the Domestic Terminal through T, A, B, C and D to E, and A to B takes about five minutes on foot. Gates are numbered along each concourse with low numbers at the centre; a gate at the far end of a concourse adds five minutes. Boarding usually closes 15 minutes before departure on domestic flights and 30 to 45 on international ones.

Arriving from abroad

International flights arrive at Concourse F (or E for some) and passengers walk to the passport-control hall in the International Terminal. Global Entry kiosks and the free Mobile Passport Control app cut the queue substantially; ordinary visitors on a busy afternoon can wait 30 to 60 minutes. After passport control you collect checked bags, clear customs, and, if you are connecting, hand the bags back at the airline re-check desks just after the customs exit, then go through the security checkpoint into Concourse F and take the Plane Train to your gate. If your journey ends in Atlanta you exit to the arrivals level instead, and the free terminal-to-terminal shuttle (between doors A1 and A2, every 15 minutes) takes you to the Domestic Terminal for MARTA, the SkyTrain and the hotel shuttles.

Leaving on an international flight

Passengers connecting from a domestic flight to an international one stay airside and ride the Plane Train to Concourse E or F; there is no passport check on departure and the 40-minute minimum applies, although a longer margin is wise because international flights close boarding earlier. Passengers starting their journey in Atlanta with a Delta international ticket can check in at either terminal; on other international airlines, check in at the International Terminal, which the free terminal-to-terminal shuttle or the Plane Train reaches from the Domestic side.

When the connection breaks

If your inbound flight is late enough to miss the connection, Delta usually rebooks automatically and the new boarding pass appears in the app before you land; check it as soon as the phone has signal and go straight to the new gate. If there is no automatic rebooking, the app’s chat and the Sky Clubs (for members) are faster than the gate agents. When the last flight of the day is gone, ask for a hotel voucher: airlines provide one for delays they caused, but not for weather. Book your own room before you leave the gate area, because a storm evening at ATL can empty every hotel within two miles in an hour; the SkyTrain hotels can be reached without a shuttle, which matters when the hotel buses are stuck in the same traffic, and the Atlanta Airport Marriott and The Westin Atlanta Airport have the most rooms of the shuttle hotels.

Overnight connections

For a scheduled overnight connection, the choice depends on the gap. Under six hours, Minute Suites inside security on Concourses B, E and F saves you from clearing security again in the morning. Longer than that, a hotel is cheaper and more comfortable: the four Gateway Center hotels are two minutes away on the free 24-hour SkyTrain, with the SpringHill Suites Atlanta Airport Gateway including breakfast from 6:30 am and the Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway a Club Lounge; among the shuttle hotels, the Atlanta Airport Marriott, The Westin Atlanta Airport, the Holiday Inn & Suites Atlanta Airport North and the Hotel Indigo Atlanta Airport College Park run their shuttles all night and the Hilton Atlanta Airport from 4 am. Bags checked through to your final destination stay with the airline overnight on a single ticket; on separate tickets you will have them with you. Our terminals guide explains where each airline checks in the next morning, and the lounges guide which clubs open earliest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 45-minute connection enough at Atlanta?

For a domestic-to-domestic Delta connection on one ticket it is legal (the minimum is about 40 minutes) and usually works, because the Plane Train reaches any concourse in under ten minutes and bags are transferred by the airline. It leaves no margin for a late inbound flight, and in summer afternoon storms delay a large share of arrivals. Ninety minutes is a comfortable domestic connection; two hours is sensible if you are checking bags on separate tickets.

How long do I need to connect from an international flight at ATL?

Delta publishes 90 minutes for international-to-domestic. Arriving passengers clear passport control (Global Entry and Mobile Passport Control lanes are faster), collect their bags, clear customs, re-check the bags at the desks immediately after, re-clear security into Concourse F and ride the Plane Train to the departure gate. Two to two and a half hours is realistic for an economy passenger without Global Entry, especially when several long-haul flights land together in the early afternoon.

Do I have to change terminals to connect at Atlanta?

No. All seven concourses and both terminals are inside one security perimeter, joined by the Plane Train every two minutes; only passengers arriving from abroad with checked bags leave and re-enter security for customs. There is no need to go outside or to use the terminal-to-terminal bus for a connection.

Where do I stay if my connection is overnight?

On the free SkyTrain if you can: the Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway, Renaissance Gateway, SpringHill Suites and AC Hotel are two minutes from the Domestic Terminal at any hour. Among the shuttle hotels, the Atlanta Airport Marriott, Westin, Holiday Inn North and Hotel Indigo run all night. For a connection under six hours, Minute Suites inside security on Concourses B, E and F avoids security altogether.
